HEALTH and LIFESTYLE

Did you know that…
there’s research to say that regular exercise can improve cognitive function, helps slow down mental ageing and helps us to process info quicker. Also, people who regularly exercise reported feeling less depressed, anxious and stressed. Exercising in a group is also great at helping us to feel great as it can be fun working out together. It can also help release feel-good endorphine hormones which also help to reduce pain and stress and it’s great when you feel a sense of achievement at completing classes and can see yourself improving each week.

the government recommends that adults should do 150 minutes of moderate exercise every week and also strength exercise working all major muscle groups 2 or 3 days a week to stay healthy. Strength exercise can include lifting weights, working with resistance bands, exercises using your own body weight eg push ups and sit ups.
We can get out for a brisk walk, house work and gardening and luckily, if you can come to our classes, you’ll get your quota of exercise that way too. Find out more at

Including this week, there are 7 weeks to get your body fit, in shape and ready for summer. Well, I hope that we’ll get some decent summer weather before then but just to let you know that there are no classes 30 June – 8 July (although I’ve still to request 28 + 29 June) but then, we’ll have our 6 or 7 week summer-holiday block July and August – definite dates to follow. You’ll also be aware that on Thursday 23 June, Dreghorn Loan Hall isn’t available again because of voting and I’m trying to arrange The Dell Room again and confirmation of this to follow when I get confirmation.

I recently found out about matcha green tea (actually tried it about 3 months ago I was served warm ceremonial matcha green tea in the traditional way: a bowl, not a cup or mug and it was delicious) and have been buying the ceremonial (best) kind ever since. It’s a green powder and you only need a small amount (probably ¼ tsp max) in a mug and is best served warm, not boiling hot, so as not to destroy the antioxidants.
I’ve bought ceremonial-grade matcha green tea powder from Amazon but you can buy it in health food shops and online too.
It’s said to boost metabolism, it’s packed with antioxidants, provides vitamin C magnesium etc and lowers blood sugar and cholesterol. If you’d like to find out more search:
healthy-magazine.co.uk/matcha-tea-health-benefits. Or
teaologists.co.uk/pages/explained-the-health-benefits-of-matcha-tea
If you type in ‘ceremonial grade matcha green tea’ into your search bar, it’ll come up with lots of other links to find out more (and buy from).

I also came across this recipe using matcha green tea for a smoothie bowl which serves 1:
Blend together: 125ml coconut water, 30g fresh baby spinach, 1 large frozen banana, 38g avocado, 2 tsp lime zest,
1 tbsp fresh lime juice & ¼ tsp matcha green tea powder. Pour into a bowl and you could sprinkle/ top with dried coconut flakes, lime zest, shelled hemp seeds – yum.

Did you know that coconut water is a source of potassium which supports normal blood pressure?

Something to think about:
Have you got your sunscreen ready for those sunny, hot days and your holidays at home or abroad?
Remember to go for UVA and UVB protection which protects your skin from harmful UV rays which can also age your skin.
