HEALTH and LIFESTYLE

This week, we’ll be moving from 2014 into 2015. We’ll be looking back over the events of the current year, to our successes and achievements and also looking forward to new possibilities, plans and adventures in the New Year.

I hope that you had a wonderful, relaxing and happy Christmas with family and friends. It’s always lovely to have everyone together and share meals and time together. I haven’t done anything fitness-wise for 2 weeks but I’ve really enjoyed the rest (well, when I say ‘”rest” I’ve been doing other things, the usual shopping, organising, cleaning, cooking, ‘the sales’ etc). This is week 3 ‘off’ but it’ll be filled with planning new class routines, music, getting files, folders and paperwork up to date – out with the old and in with the new as they say!

Have you reviewed all your achievements in 2014 yet? It’s good to look back and congratulate yourself on all the experiences and goals that we set ourselves and accomplished. You may have made new friends, passed exams or are working towards a new qualification or learned/are learning a new language. Lots happened to say the least.

There are soooo many possibilities if we’re willing to look for them and accept challenges.
So, what are your aspirations and goals for 2015? I hope that you’ll want to get your fitness ‘back on track’ and join us in our New Year, New You updated classes.

Do you make New Year resolutions? If so, do you stick with them and see them through, realise and achieve your goals and plans?
Some times, we think “right, that’s it, I have to get fitter, lose some weight, tone up” because we might feel lethargic or because of all the excesses of the festive period – the food, mince pies, Christmas pud, wine, alcohol, too much sitting around….and we sign up for a class or the gym and are all enthusiastic and determined to begin with. Then, as time goes by, some lose interest or think “this is too hard” or “my muscles/legs are aching after those squats” but if have set yourself goals and regular targets and are focussed and determined to Keep Going, you’ll find it easier to get into the routine of attending classes and fitness sessions. Going to a class will be ‘the norm’. There will always be new challenges with fitness. I never make any classes the same and I like to ‘mix things up’.

I also love our community classes where we can get together as a group with the intention of working out but we also get to meet new friends, welcome and encourage new people to our classes and also catch up with and find out what we’ve all been up to. I don’t think that happens in classes in the gym where everyone seems to be in a rush to get there, do their workouts and rush to get away and move on to the next thing. What do you think?

I’m so fortunate that because I’ve been teaching in Colinton and Craiglockhart for so many years, that I’ve gotten to know you and can say that each and every one of you is a friend and I’m so grateful to be working out with lovely people as yourself, aw, true.

Thank you for your continued support over the years and I hope that you’ll continue to be a valued part of our Complementary Fitness team.

Did you know that
Broccoli doesn’t just taste good. It’s been proven over and over to contain amazing compounds that heal the body and prevent cell damage. While tests indicate that eating it raw is the way to get the most out of it nutritionally, “tender-crisp” cooking to a bright green color still has very good-for-you attributes. This may be why broccoli has been around and all over the world for the last 2,000 years.
Here’s a healthy recipe using broccoli which can be used as a sauce, dressing or dip:
Ingredients: 1 large bunch of fresh broccoli, 2 to 4 cloves crushed garlic,
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil, 1 tsp cumin, 1 tsp crushed coriander seeds,
1/4 cup chopped onion, a pinch of black pepper, 3 tsp lemon or lime juice, 1 cup water

Place half an inch or less of water into a large saucepan to a boil.
Chop the broccoli into large chunks and place into the boiling water, stirring until each chunk is wet, until just tender and still vibrant green.
Transfer broccoli to the bowl of a food processor and add remaining ingredients, processing until pureed. Return mixture into saucepan and warm over medium heat for about 3 minutes for a thick sauce that can be thinned with water if preferred.
Adjust seasonings accordingly. Makes 6 servings
