HEALTH and LIFESTYLE

Did you know that…
this Thursday 5 May, our 6.35pm Fitness Yoga and 7.30pm Fitness Pilates classes will be in the Dell Room, Colinton Parish Church, Dell Road because Dreghorn Loan Hall isn’t available because of the Election.
There’s limited (but some) parking down at the church but you may find it easier to park in the village and/or walk down – let’s hope it’s a lovely night.
Let me know if you’re not sure where The Dell Room is. Search EH13 0JR online for more detail too but walk down the Long Steps next to Colinton Inn, keep walking down and over the bridge till you get to the church, go into the church grounds through the big glass doors and the Dell Room is on the ground floor – you’ll see us in there.
You can also turn down into Spylaw Street at the Royal Bank, continue down into Dell Road to the church.

it’s Red Cross Week from this Sunday 8 May – 14 May. Find out more at

Something to think about/try:
I’ve just come across Russell James and his delicious recipes. You can find out about him and click on and try his raw recipes at therawchef.com/recipes/
I’ve tried Turmeric Tea before and here’s the recipe for it here (serves 2): blend 3 cups hot water, ½ tsp turmeric powder, 2 tsp honey, 2T coconut butter/oil, pinch black pepper & Celtic or Himalayan salt, some ground cinnamon.

I’ve also tried Rejuvenate Latte and it’s delicious too.
Click on the Recipes tab for these recipes. There are lots of recipes under headings eg: drinks, breakfasts, main courses, bread & crackers, soups etc.

I adapted a recipe for energy balls which can be full of nuts, dried fruit, superfoods etc and they turned out very successfully and taste delicious too. The ‘secret’ ingredient in these particular ones is: turmeric – the organic kind of course (you know me! but it doesn’t have to be). Turmeric is a great anti-inflammatory and immune booster and I love the taste. This recipe makes 16 good-sized energy balls.
Here’s the adapted recipe: Blend together 140g dried fruit (I used a combo of sugar-free, apple infused cranberries, unsulphured apricots and prunes but you can adapt and use dried mango/what ever you have), 30g goji berries, 140g cashew nuts (I always pre-soak nuts for a few hours to release enzyme inhibitors then drain and rinse nuts 1st), 60g desiccated coconut, 1tsp baobab powder (powdered dried baobab fruit, low in sugar and fat, rich in Vit C, calcium, iron, magnesium & potassium – buy in H&B/Real Foods), 1 ¼ tsp ground turmeric, 1T rosewater, 1 lime or lemon juice & zest & 2-4T water.
Combine all the ingredients together and roll into 1T size balls and coat in desiccated coconut or shelled hemp seeds (or a combo of both). Easy to make, I love them so let me know if you like them too. Great for a mid-morning/afternoon snack.

The Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen Of 2016

The ‘clean 15’ are: avocados, sweetcorn, pineapple, cabbage, sweet peas (frozen), onions, asparagus, mangoes, papaya, kiwi, aubergine, honeydew melon, grapefruit, cantaloupe and cauliflower. Click on the link (or copy and paste to your browser) to find out more and why.

Class feedback
“I have to say your class yesterday (Kettlebell workout Wed 27 April) was brilliant. As always, your music choice, routine etc is sooooo good. You worked us all hard but it felt at the end of the hour, I’d enjoyed it and felt so good, I could have carried on. Looking forward to the class tomorrow (Fri Freestyle Fitness Yoga) which again, is different but equally as fulfilling”.
Thanks very much for the comment, I really appreciate it. It’s great to get feedback and find out what people like/don’t like and how they feel during and after classes too (Susan)
