HEALTH and LIFESTYLE

Did you know that…
I/we had a very merry Christmas and enjoyed New Year celebrations too. It’s only the 2nd day of the new year so let’s aim for this year to be the best, one that’s filled with great memories, happy times, fitness, fun and joy.
That’s going to be my aim for this year, no other resolutions other than that. How about you?

The tougher your workout/the harder you work in your class, the more energy you’ll use and the more fat you’ll burn. To help you lose any festive excess weight, our Wednesday 9.30am class will be Circuit Toning where we’ll either work together or in small groups to blast away any fat and build some muscle. We’ll encourage each other, do our best and improve our metabolism. We don’t have to stick to 6 weeks of circuits – let’s see how it goes first though. It’s a change/a challenge and maybe just what we need at this time of year to ‘get things moving’ again!
I certainly need it!

If weight loss is your goal, we should still rely on maintaining a calorie deficit which is burning more energy than we consume. The best way to do that is by exercising.

It’s estimated that yoga developed as a practice more than 5000 years ago. It’s said that regular practice can help you sleep more soundly, improve your flexibility, reduce your blood pressure and risk of diabetes. Will you join our Fitness Yoga classes on Thursdays 6.35pm and/or Fridays at 9.30am in Dreghorn Loan Hall? I hope so.

In the 1920’s, Joseph Pilates opened his Body Conditioning Gym where he developed machines to activate the body’s inner muscles. According to a Beijing University, Pilates training noted an increase in ‘alpha peak power’ related to improved neural networks and memory. Body benefits of attending Pilates classes can be: core strength, less back pain, improved posture and injury resistance. By the way, a lot of people who attend our classes often say that the reason they start a Fitness Pilates class initially is because of a sore back. With regular attendance, they tell me that their back has improved a lot and if they miss a couple of weeks, their back pain or aches return!
There are spaces for you and your friends and colleagues in our all-level Tuesday (Craiglockhart church) and Thursday (Dreghorn Loan Hall, Colinton) 7.30pm classes so come and join us from next week.
Classes are for men as well as women. You’ll be in the company of guys like Messrs Beckham, Grant and Woods – unfortunately, they don’t come to our classes in Edinburgh but they’d be very welcome if they did.

Something to think about:
Book your place in our Tue/Thurs evening Fitness Pilates or Thurs Fitness Yoga classes by emailing me and I’ll add your name to that class list. Remember that classes are just £5 to get you on your fitness 2017 journey.

I got The Little Book of Mindfulness as one of my Christmas presents and thought you might like to read this about gratitude: ‘Gratitude and appreciation help us turn towards joy and gladness, which create chemicals of well-being and peace in our whole body. Studies show that the regular practice of gratitude and appreciation, including writing down the experiences you feel grateful for, can lead to better health, less stress and a more optimistic outlook on life’. So find a peaceful spot, sit down and write in a notebook. Note down all the things you’re grateful for (friendships, memories, family etc). Read through the list and internally give thanks for everything you’ve noted. Bring awareness to the moment, what you’re grateful for right now and notice how it feels in your body and where you feel it. Then just breathe and sit for a bit longer. A good practice to get used to doing especially in our fast-paced world where everything is instant and go, go, go. So it’s good to balance things out, take time to relax, reflect and as they say ‘be present’.

To start things off in my new journal, I’m grateful for my family, friends and for all of you, for everyone who comes to our classes and for your continued support – it just wouldn’t be the same without you. Thank you.

Inspirational and other quotes:
Don’t be afraid to be open-minded, your brain isn’t going to fall out!
Confidence is an inside job.
“Too many overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are” – Malcolm Forbes
“If it came from a plant, eat it, if it was made in a plant, don’t” – Michael Pollan so, choose plants, not factories and nourish your body with real food.

I look forward to seeing you from 10 January onwards for 2017 fitness, strength, flexibility & fun.
If you want to, you can email me to book your place, ask any questions or just turn up and join us next week.
