Fitness Pilates tip of the day –
Start the day with a couple of Roll Down exercises to really help mobilise your spine and help to release any tension built up over the night whilst you were sleeping.
It will only take a few minutes but think about standing tall, brace your abdominal muscles so you can feel the control you have in this mid section and then let the rest of the body relax. Start with your head and shoulders and slowly roll down over your legs as far as you want to go. Let your hands ‘walk’ down your legs to either above or below your knees or down to your ankles. If you have any discomfort in your lower back, keep your knees slightly bent. Otherwise pull up through the hamstrings and abs as you roll back up. Repeat 4-5 times!! – thanks Fitness Pilates
Complementary Fitness Pilates comment
“I had been suffering from severe back pain for a few weeks, was attending physiotherapist appointments, and doing the daily exercises recommended by the physio. Unfortunately within a few more weeks, the back pain had developed into Sciatica, which was extremely painful and debilitating, and required me taking up to a dozen tablets a day, of 4 different painkillers, just in order to function. Shortly after the Sciatica diagnosis, I decided to go to Susan’s Fitness Pilates class. I let her know that I had Sciatica and therefore had reduced mobility, and she advised me to take it easy, work round it, and not push my body beyond what was comfortable.
Within 3-4 weeks, the level of pain had decreased markedly, I would estimate by 50%, and my overall flexibility and ease of movement had improved by a similar amount. Within a few months, my Sciatica had eased off and I was able to come off the painkillers, but of course I continued to attend Susan’s class, and almost 2 years on, despite the occasional twinge in my back, the Sciatica has not returned.”
Andrew also says: Once again, thank you so much for your class, I am fairly certain that without doing your class, I would have ended up having major surgery on my back (which knowing people who have had it, is not a good long-term solution), and I genuinely believe that the NHS should be able to “prescribe” pilates classes for back pain sufferers, they would save a fortune in painkillers and surgery, and looking at the bigger picture, there would be many less work days lost to back pain.
