HEALTH and LIFESTYLE

Interesting/Did you know that…
There’s just one class on this week and it’s our Tuesday Fitness Pilates class at 7.30pm in Craiglockhart Church hall.
I’m then having a break but I thought I’d remind you of our summer classes and they are:
our Tue Fitness Pilates class in Craiglockhart church hall is on this Tue: 27 June and starts back again on Tues 18 July and
our Dreghorn Loan church hall classes re-start Wed 19, Thurs 20 & Fri 21 July.

I’d like to thank everyone who came to our summer Fitness Lunch last Monday. There were 14 of us and we enjoyed the food and great company.

talking of food, it’s the perfect time of year to increase your intake of veg in salads and smoothies. When we opt for more brightly coloured veg, leaves and superfoods, they’re rich in antioxidants and great for our health in general. Antioxidants are also crucial for protecting our heart and brain. I also like to add ‘superfoods’ to salads, smoothies and stews ie chia seeds, kale, quinoa and flax seeds. I also try to eat organic and foods that are in season too and it’s great that all sorts of berries are in season now and I can top off my porridge with them or add them to smoothies, chia puddings or on top of coconut yoghurt maybe along with some other ‘superfoods’ like bee pollen, cacao nibs, goji berries, raw honey etc.

yesterday morning, I made a cacao, banana, goji smoothie for breakfast which was delicious. I started off with almond milk and added it to a Nutribullet cup then added in a banana, 1 tsp cacao powder, 1-2T goji berries, ½-1 tsp bee pollen, 1 tsp maca powder and I also added in a dried fig.

I don’t know if you use any of these in your smoothies but you may like to know that goji berries are known for increasing strength and longevity. They contain anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and antibacterial compounds as well as zinc, selenium, calcium and trace minerals.
Maca powder supports the body’s natural stress response, boosts energy, improves performance and promotes hormone balance. Cacao contains protein, fat, carbs, fibre, iron, copper, zinc, sulfur and calcium.

according to recent research by the University of Exeter, drinking concentrated blueberry juice improves brain function in older people. The study showed that healthy adults aged between 65 and 77 who drank concentrated blueberry juice every day showed improvements in cognitive function, blood flow to the brain and activation of the brain while carrying out cognitive tests. There was also evidence suggesting improvement in working memory. Blueberries are rich in flavonoids which possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. I’m on the hunt for concentrated blueberry juice now but am sure I’ll find it in Real Foods, Hanover Health Food Store (Hanover St) or H&B.

27 June is International Sunglasses Day 2017 so let’s hope that we get lots of lovely sun and we can get our sunnies on and protect our eyes from the harmful UV rays. Take some photos and get them on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtags #SunglassSelfie or #NationalSunglassesDay
