Did you know that…
The Cockburn Association (no, nothing to do with me!) have organised another (the 24th) Edinburgh Doors Open Day – well weekend actually as its on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September. There are lots of places to visit all over the city, with free entry too. Edinburgh Doors Open Day has adopted a theme of food and drink as part of Food and Drink Scotland 2015. For further info, visit www.cockburnassociation.org.uk/edinburgh-doors-open-day I picked up several brochures last week and people could pick them up in class but if you would like one (rather than looking online), you’ll get one from the library or The Cockburn Association which is based in Trunk’s Close, 55 High Street.
Have fun visiting some of “the city’s most architecturally and culturally significant buildings, all for free.
From heritage landmarks to the city’s newest architecture, Doors Open Day has offered free access to properties, places and spaces that are either not usually open to the public or would normally charge an entry fee”.

I went for my first training run at the weekend in preparation for our 10k Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest course in Edinburgh on Sunday 18 October – omg, not long now! I just went a short run so I’ll need to build on it, increase the mileage and ‘up’ my fitness as well. Cardiff, Nottingham, Manchester and London have also organised events across these cities too. There are obstacles at every kilometre and I’m sure that there will be lots of mud and some water challenges too. Can you imagine climbing up rope or walls, crawling through mud or water, climbing over obstacles and sliding down chutes? What have I/we let ourselves in for? Have a look at www.mhsurvival.co.uk – do you fancy doing it next year? Don’t know that I will, will see how I get on, or should I say ‘IF I survive’!!! ha ha. It might end up being ‘survival of the weakest’! Oh well, as long as I do survive, don’t drown, break anything etc. I have to think positively – I’m sure it will be fun and we’ll all encourage each other.
There are 10 of us in our team which Nicola organised and we’re called “The Perfect 10” (ha ha) although 1 or possibly 2 have dropped out. Entry is cheaper per person in a team of 10 (about £47 each) but £70 I think individually. I’m sure that Rat Rate, the operator, have a lot of obstacles to organise and there will be a lot of marshals and hopefully water stations (the drinking kind) round the course. Wish me/us luck.

Something to think about:
In the previous Fitness Newsletters, I’ve mentioned Mindfulness and given a couple of websites that you might like to find out about (eg headspace) and there are lots of books, youtube videos etc about Mindfulness too.
Professor Kuyken, a professor of clinical psychology at Oxford Uni, who is leading a study into mindfulness, says “just as going for a run is a well known way of protecting general physical health, mindfulness exercises develop mental fitness and resilience”. What are your thoughts on mindfulness, being in the present/in the now, finding ways to keep your mind clear, calm, focussed etc? I know that 1 or 2 or you are really interested in mindfulness and do practice it every/most days and that its made a difference to you which is really great.
