Interesting/Did you know that…
Schools are back this week so hopefully we’ll be ‘getting back to normal’ and I look forward to seeing you all in our classes this week. I hope that you’ve had a great summer so far, enjoyed your holidays (or are still to enjoy them) and that you’re enjoying the Fringe etc.

Beetroots have benefits for our workouts and help maximise recovery time too. They contain anti-inflammatory properties that help prevent muscle soreness. I bought some fresh raw beetroots the other day and boiled them in my pressure cooker (takes about 13 or 14 mins), peeled them and made beetroot hummus which was delicious.
I even tried making my own tahini but not sure it’s worth all ‘the faff’ – will see.

We were babysitting on Saturday and walked with the pram into town. It did rain really heavily (that’s our British/Scottish weather for you!!) when we got to Slateford but we were prepared with rain covers and jackets with hoods.
Did you know that walking has many health benefits and is said to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses. It’s great for relieving stress and anxiety and it’s great for supporting our bones and joints too. I certainly slept better that night and do think that all the fresh air combined with the health and fitness benefits of walking does help.

Stress in small doses can be a good thing ie it can push us to do something new. Stress triggers adrenaline in the body and activates the fight or flight response to protect us when we’re in danger. However, when we’re constantly stressed, in a state of alert, possibly fear and anxiety, then it all takes it’s toll on our body and mind. Our sleep and digestive system can be affected, we can suffer with headaches or migraines and our immune system is lowered and that’s the time that we often catch colds etc. It’s a great to keep your stress levels ‘in check’, take a step back and look at ‘the bigger picture’ sometimes, learn to relax, meditate, read a book, talk over concerns and exercise – it’s a great way to relieve stress as you know. I also believe that using our breathe helps to relax and focus us and it also pushes more oxygen round our bodies. So whether you walk, practice yoga, Pilates or mindfulness, I hope it helps you stay as stress-free as you can.

Magnesium plays a key role in supporting energy production, regulating blood glucose levels, supporting our immune system and regulating stress. Magnesium deficiency can increase feelings of stress and anxiety. I like to relax in a bath which has added magnesium (Epsom) salts added to it. Magnesium is naturally found in foods ie nuts and seeds, leafy green veg and pulses.

I always have breakfast and have it by 6.45am when exercising on a Wed & Fri morning in our 9.30am classes. I like to digest breakfast and use the energy that it provides to give me a kick start and enough fuel for my workout. For me (and I know that we’re all different), I think that breakfast helps me concentrate and boosts my energy levels (have you seen me jumping around on a Wednesday morning?). Breakfast can provide essential nutrients ie calcium, iron, vitamins, protein and fibre. Research shows that those who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight and some say that if breakfast is skipped, there’s the possibility of being so hungry mid-morning, that for quickness, we turn often turn to high sugar fatty foods and snacks. What do you eat in the morning?
For me, it’s usually a chia pudding or a nutrient-dense smoothie and sometimes porridge with hemp seeds and almonds for added protein.

I like to buy organic when I can but didn’t know that organic standards can be different from country to country. In the UK, we tend to use the Soil Association standards where organic means working with nature, high animal welfare, low pesticides, no herbicides, artificial fertilisers, no colours, preservatives or antibiotic use. Organic is better for the planet too.

Today (14/8) starts National Allotment Week and if you have your own allotment, garden or small space, you can grow your own fruit and veg and you also get physical exercise too.

It’s World Photo Day on 19 Aug and taking photos is a great way of sharing images and memories with family and friends. You’re welcome to share your photos with me/us too.

Thank you so much for your Fringe recommendations so far and please continue to tell me what’s worth going to see. So far, we’ve only managed to see a few street performers but hoping to book and go to one or 2 shows soon.
