Did you know that
As we age, health and wellbeing are really important and taking part in fitness and exercise classes can play a part and help in maintaining strength, flexibility and mobility. So no matter what you age, you’re encouraged to be active and stay that fit.

Did you also know that the health benefits of being active into older age are widespread which include decreasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol so it’s a good idea to stay as active as you can. By the way, did you see in the news at the weekend that a 95 year old man has broken the record for the fastest race in his age group? He seemingly, only took up running recently! Now, that’s impressive isn’t it?

I know that it can still be cold ‘out there’ but make the decision to walk more. You might like to get off the bus a stop or two earlier and walk the rest of the way to work and/or home. That way you’ll also get some fresh air and I always find that you notice things more when you walk rather than when you’re on the bus, train or in the car.

Of course, I’d encourage you to come to our classes and as many as you can. If you haven’t been in a while, please come back and join us – you’re very welcome, it would be great to see you again. Quite apart from the physical benefits, there’s also the social aspect of coming to our community based classes in Colinton and Craiglockhart. You might remember that if you read our Newsletter a couple of weeks ago (2 March), we mentioned that while exercising in groups, that endorphins (happy hormones) are increased and released when we do activities together.

I’ve also been reading in recent research looking at the effects of exercise and physical activity on the brain saying that ‘physical activity training appears to have both broad and specific cognitive effects: broad in the sense that various cognitive processes benefit from exercise participation and specific in the sense that the effects on some cognitive processes, especially executive control processes (which include scheduling, planning, working memory, multi-tasking and dealing with ambiguity) are disproportionately larger’. The authors conclude that there is evidence at the molecular, cellular, behavioural and systems level that physical activity is beneficial to cognition. So there is more and more evidence out there about exercise and it’s effects on the brain and cognition. Happy days!

Something to think about:
There are also spaces in Nicola’s High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) class on Thursday 6.30pm in Dreghorn Loan Hall. Nicola demonstrates modifications/easier options which a lot of us take. Bring your mat and water, wear trainers and improve your fitness, strength and endurance – only £4 per class.
