Did you go to any of the Doors Open days events at the weekend? Please let me know which ones you went to, what you found interesting etc, thanks. On Saturday, we went to Venue No 53 Royal Edinburgh Community Gardens – Cyrenians. The Royal Edinburgh Community Gardens is managed by the Cyrenians and they work with hospital patients, staff, volunteers, visitors etc to grow fruit, veg, herbs, flowers, cook food and more. I found out that you can go on a Fri between 11.30-3pm to ‘The Growing Space’, just past the Hive, opposite the Jardine Clinic and you can buy fruit, veg and they’ll also have some eggs for sale soon too. We bought some spinach, rocket, lovely tomatoes and a packet of mixed flower seeds. Info at
After that, we went to Venue 48 Edinbugh Cyrenians FareShare Depot in Jane Street, Leith. It’s a social enterprise programme and their mission is to bring good food and healthy lifestyles to people who are experiencing disadvantage, isolation, poverty and homelessness. The FareShare programme collect surplus foods from supermarkets etc and redistribute to over 50 projects across Edinburgh and central and SE areas of Scotland. Info at
We then had a quick visit to the Royal Observatory, Blackford Hill (which was very busy with lots of people and families) and we watched a film about the universe, galaxies, stars which was all very interesting too.

Did you know that…
Exercise is a great way to burn off adrenalin. Stress and anxiety keep your body in a state of high alert and exercise helps to combat this by burning off adrenalin, relaxing muscles and triggering the release of endorphins.

Fruit and vegetables are a rich source of potassium which plays an important part in bone health.
Kale, spring greens and broccoli are a great alternative calcium source.

Exercise makes your bones stronger if you combine weight bearing exercises that make you move against gravity with resistance exercises that involve lifting weights, using resistance bands or your own body weight to strengthen muscles. Our classes will help you strengthen your bones and muscles and we use resistance bands too in our Wednesday 9.30am class.

Our training for the Men’s Health 10k obstacle course challenge is going well, although up until now, we’ve only been for a run once a week but on Friday afternoon, we went for a 4 mile run (hard to gauge the distance as I don’t have a tracker – but it felt like 4 miles!!) through the Dell again. I just love the Dell, running along the paths, the trees, the water and the sound of it, other runners and people saying ‘hello’. Its so much nicer than running on the road, traffic, lights, stop/start etc. Anyway it was 2/3 of the distance that we have to run although we didn’t do any obstacles/press ups etc this time – my excuse was that we ran further and that I’d ‘done my bit’ in classes this week! I think I’ll be in for a total shock on Sunday 18 Oct. The mud, the water, the hills, the various obstacles, lifting heavy barrels, crawling through and under nets. I hope that I survive!!!

Something to think about:
“When we choose organic plant based foods, we take our power back and we decide that we are going to have quality and that we are not going to suffer from the 50 ingredients that are in processed foods” David Wolfe, Food Matters
