HEALTH and LIFESTYLE
Did you know that…
8-14 Aug is National Allotments Week and their theme this year is “Growing Together”. Find out more at http://www.nsalg.org.uk/news-events-campaigns/national-allotments-week/ Do you have an allotment where you grow your own veg, fruit/plants? You can apply to the Council for an allotment although there is a waiting list, some of 2 years but good if you want to get your name down now with a view to retirement or spending some of your free time there (even if you’re not thinking of retiring for a while).
It’s strawberry season so I thought I’d try a strawberry chia breakfast or dessert recipe. You know how much I love chia seeds and puddings right? This recipe is for 2 and it’s ½ cup of chia seeds, 2 cups almond/hazelnut/almond or dairy milk, ¼ cup raisins, 3 cups fresh or frozen strawberries (you could of course use raspberries too/instead) and 1T maple syrup.
Soak the chia seeds in the milk for at least an hour or overnight if you want to have it for breakfast. Then blend the fresh or frozen berries and maple syrup together and mix it with the chia raisin mix. You can top it off with toasted crushed nuts/mulberries/granola
Something to think about:
We’re all so lucky to live in Edinburgh where, at the moment, we have the Fringe and Festival on and we also have a lovely beach, the hills, reservoirs, the Canal and Dell too. Last Tuesday morning, a friend and I walked through the woods and round Threipmuir Reservoir. It wasn’t a really long walk but it was lovely to be out in the fresh air, ‘in the hills’, looking over the Black Hill, Scald Law and the Kips too. We were down by the water’s edge, walking over the pebbles and it was so peaceful and just like being on holiday. People were walking their dogs, some were fishing and couples and families were enjoying the sunshine and walk. I’ve just found the website if you’re looking to walk in the hills, it’s at
If you click on the Pentlands and West Lothian link, you’ll find other hills, grades, distances and how long it’s likely to take you to walk.
You’ll definitely get your 10,000 or more steps in then!
Oh I meant to say, while in the Pentlands, I thought I’d do some planks and a plank rotation – as you do!! Why not? Nice to exercise in the fresh air!
I’ve put this in a newsletter before but thought it was worth giving this advice from a tree to you again:
Stand tall and proud. Go out on a limb. Remember your foots. Drink plenty of water. Be content with your natural beauty and Enjoy the view.
I like these posts on the Dalai Lama’s Facebook page:
“There are always problems to face, but it makes a difference if our minds are calm. On the surface we may get upset, but it makes a difference if we are able to stay calm in the depths of our minds” and “I consider we are all the same as human beings, mentally, emotionally and physically. In order to ensure a more peaceful world and a healthier environment we sometimes point a finger at others saying they should do this or that. But change must start with us as individuals. If one individual becomes more compassionate it will influence others and so we will change the world”.
Quotes that I like:
“If you’re going through hell, keep going” – Winston Churchill
“What seems to us as bitter trials are often blessings in disguise” – Oscar Wilde
Bryce (Tue/Thurs Pilates) sent me some recommendations for Fringe shows and has given star ratings (4 good, 5 very good) and with his approval, I’m sharing these with you here if you’re looking for shows to book up for. Here goes:
“I highly recommend Water on Mars – a show by 3 very talented and energetic jugglers with all kinds of amusing twists although it did end up in total anarchy, my best £6 worth in a long time” and “I would also give 4 stars to the comedy Boris: World King and the acrobatic show Driftwood”.
Please also send me your recommendations and also bad reviews too.
