I love Jan de Vries shops (there’s a great one in Queensferry St on the left going down from the west end and I even visited the one in Troon when we were there last weekend) and if you go onto the website, there’s even a recipe for a walnut and rasp brownies which looks easy to make and has healthy ingredients too. Nice for a treat.
that almonds are one of the most nutrient-rich tree nuts as they’re high in protein, fibre, vitamin E, calcium and some B vitamins. They’re also high in monounsaturated fat (the good Mediterranean kind). Find out why they’re so good for you and more info at www.almonds.co.uk
oh, talking of nuts (in general), a study by Imperial College London and Norwegian Uni of Science and Technology found that people who ate a small handful of nuts daily, cut their risk of premature death by 22%. It’s thought that nuts help reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. I always soak nuts (usually the night before and certainly for a few hours) in advance because soaking or activating them, removes phytates and enzyme inhibitors. Be sure to drain off the soaking water and rinse the nuts.
that I’m always encouraging you to eat organic, healthy breakfasts, meals etc? well if you click on (or copy and paste) https://www.wakeuptoorganic.co.uk/recipes, there are lots and lots of breakfast, snack and smoothie recipes which all look delicious.
that sunshine triggers the release of serotonin (the chemical that’s responsible for mood balance) so it’s a great idea, now that we’re actually getting some sunshine (!), to eat our meals outside if/when we can. Serotonin is manufactured in the brain and intestines and we can also increase our serotonin levels with diet and exercise. I know I always feel better when I exercise and feel more relaxed in the sunshine rather than a rainy, freezing cold day.
There are lots of interesting articles online if you search ‘exercise and serotonin’.
according to an article in my professional fitness magazine, most of the everyday back pain that people experience is the result of an over-pronounced kyphosis/curvature of the spine with shoulders rounded forward. This posture often happens because of weak muscles around the shoulder blades. To correct this, we must strengthen these muscles and during a workout, we can activate these rotator cuff/muscles round the shoulder blades by sticking out your chest, pulling your shoulders back and squeezing the shoulder blades together. This will limit the curvature of the spine, flatten the back, strengthen it, protect it, all while making it more powerful/stronger. I often say “squeeze your shoulder blades together” – that’s why. I know that people who either spend lots of time driving and/or people working at their desk or computer/laptop for long periods of the day, often have shoulders forward which can result in tight chest/pectoral muscles and weak back muscles.
