Did you know that…
According to the Lancet, we need to do an hour of exercise a day to undo the damage caused by sitting at a desk all day. They say that any time of exercise, including brisk walks, counts towards the hour’s exercise.
It’s a great idea to mix up brisk walking some days then exercising with us in one (or more) of our Complementary Fitness classes – see Classes tab for details and join us.

If/when you’re tired, or when the weather’s not great, exercise may be the last thing you want to do but physical activity makes you feel more energised. Exercise stimulates metabolic rate (the speed at which the body uses energy) so the more energy you expend through exercise, the more energetic you’ll feel.
I like how exercise makes me feel more energetic, happy and generally better.
I think that working out to music also helps and there are certain songs/my favourites that just help me work (out) harder and get me through it much easier. I love jumping and bouncing around (you may have noticed!!) as exercise also releases good, happy hormones through our bodies (endorphins) which makes you feel good.
So just remember how good you felt during and at the end of a class, and knowing that you’ve actually done your hour’s exercise for the day, instead of sitting at home with your feet up, that makes you feel good about it too. Win-win.

Apart from the physical aspects of doing yoga ie improved flexibility, strength, posture, balance etc, it can also help to calm the mind and make us feel more relaxed and focussed. We’re all so busy in our lives with a million things to do all the time but taking the time out for yourself in a Fitness Yoga (and/or Fitness Pilates) class, using stress-reducing techniques such as focussing on your breathing or meditation, really helps balance our busy schedules.

What do you think? How do you like to relax and re-charge?

Even at this time of year, when exercising, it’s still a good idea to sip some water and stay hydrated.
Did you know that mild dehydration can make you feel lethargic, can’t be bothered doing anything so remember to bring your water to classes with you.

During the week, I made banana pancakes and the recipe is so easy and simple to make, that I thought I’d share it with you (again?). I blended 1 banana, 2 eggs and ¼ tsp ground cinnamon while heating up a medium size frying pan which had some coconut heating up in it. Once hot, I made 6 pancakes. They’re great anytime, pre or post workout/breakfast or as a snack. They’re also lovely with peanut butter on them or berries and yoghurt. Mmmm.

At this time of year, I love making and eating soups. I could eat soup any time and generally make lentil and coconut soup with lots of veg in or a bean soup or ‘fridge soup’ which is made with the veg that’s in the fridge and usually with some potato and onions too. I love to add some sesame or hemp seeds on the top which adds some protein to the soup too.

Something to think about:

It’s about balancing blood-sugar in our diet, yoga, meditation, sleep and herbs.

Remember last week, I talked about various whole grains and mentioned amaranth? Well here’s a recipe on the Real Foods website using it as an ingredient in this breakfast recipe. I haven’t popped grains but it looks so easy to do that I’m going to give it a go. Let me know if you try out the recipe too.

I love this: “Balance is key in everything you do –
Dance all night long and practice yoga the next day. Drink wine but don’t forget your green juice.
Eat chocolate when your heart wants it and kale salad when your body needs it.
Wear high heels on Saturday and walk barefoot on Sunday.
Go shopping at the mall and then sit down and meditate in your bedroom.
Live high and low. Move and stay still. Embrace all sides of who you are and live your authentic truth.
Be brave and bold and spontaneous and loud and let that complement your abilities to find silence and patience and modesty and peace. Aim for balance. Make your own rules and don’t let anybody tell you how to live according to theirs”- Rachel Brathen
