HEALTH and LIFESTYLE
Did you know that…
I know that some of you have said you’re off on holiday this week after Easter and I hope that you have a fabulous and relaxing time. I hope that you’ll join us again soon.
A reminder and for your diary: on Thurs 4 June, Dreghorn Loan Hall is being used for voting so we’ll be using the Dell Room, Colinton Parish Church, Dell Road instead that night and as the choir will have to move out to accommodate us, we’ll just have one class that night at 7.30pm (Fitness Pilates only that night).
One or two ‘new people’ are joining us this week and I’d like to welcome you to Complementary Fitness and hope that you’ll become ‘regulars’ too.
Ease yourself into exercise, take your time, opt for easier options until you build up strength, flexibility, balance etc.
When you feel ready, add in the more challenging options.
I also know that even though we’ve been coming to classes for a while/ages, it depends how we’re feeling as to how we get on in class, with our exercise/workout.
If we’re feeling a bit ‘off’, not quite 100% although nothing major to actually stop us from exercising, then we can feel that our balance is ‘all over the place’ (quite literally) and we don’t have the same motivation that we normally have.
Sometimes when we’ve got a lot on our minds and we’re trying to do, say a standing quad stretch, our focus goes ‘out of the window’ and we (well, when I say we, I also mean me) and ‘we’ wobble and stumble. That’s all normal and we shouldn’t feel bad if this happens.
Easier said than done sometimes but focusing on your breath can help us to relax more and we can then find that our balance, posture, strength etc return.
A lot of us take short, shallow breaths and our ribcages hardly move. We don’t normally pay much attention to respiration (breathing) – luckily it just happens without much thought but whether in a class or not, if you’re feeling a bit anxious or tense, busy or standing in a big long queue, then try focusing on your breath and get some more oxygen into your body and your muscles. You could think about breathing in a word eg ‘relaxation’ (or peace, calm or positivity). When you breathe out, you could imagine that you’re releasing and letting go of any anxiety, tension, negative thoughts or emotions. You’ll find that you’ll soon be more relaxed and able to cope better, put things into perspective and be able to do those 1-leg balance challenges! I hope this is helpful/useful. Give it a try.
I’m really grateful for everyone who went to my Complementary Fitness Facebook page and liked it and also taken time to give it and our classes a great Review – thank you.
Keep up the great work, keep coming to our classes, keep yourself fit and active and continue to be a valued part of our team.
Something to think about:
“Stressful thoughts about food can literally cause symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue and digestion issues”. #mindbody and @TheMarkDavid
“If you have discipline, drive and determination, nothing is impossible” – D L Bailey
“success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in, day out”
Let’s work off all those Easter eggs, all the chocolate, cakes and treats (I often talk to myself by the way!!) this week as we strive for more fitness, flexibility and fun in classes.
I use my Nutribullet a lot to make smoothies and thought you might like to try this smoothie (use a blender if you don’t have one): blend 1 cup of spinach, 1 chopped up frozen banana (or 1 banana if you don’t want it frozen),
1T almond butter, 1T raw cacao nibs, 1 tsp ground cinnamon and 1½ cups unsweetened almond (or other non-dairy milk).
I buy a big tub of organic almond butter, organic cinnamon and cacao nibs from: realfoodsource.com (they’re based in East Lothian and delivery promptly/the next day usually).
