FITNESS & LIFESTYLE
Did you know that?
I’ve read that ‘September is the new January’ in the fitness world and it was so great to welcome back people who’ve been to our classes before but had a break for a while or been away over the summer holidays and now returning to us. It was also lovely to meet some ‘brand new people’ and welcome them to our classes too.
I hope that you will ALL continue to work out with us and challenge yourself in different ways.
We had some great feedback after our workouts and yes they’re challenging and we may feel some muscle aches after our first workout again, but let’s continue to work (out) on getting stronger, more flexible and working all those muscles as well as bones, heart, lungs, mind etc. Are you up for the challenge? I hope so.
World Alzheimer’s Month is in September. It’s an annual international event run by Alzheimer’s Disease International, (ADI). The aim of the month is to raise awareness and challenge stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s and dementia. The event has been running for 6 years and 21 September is World Alzheimer’s Day.
Good to know that although there are no specific preventative measures to these diseases, what can be recommended is a healthy lifestyle – eating a healthy diet and staying physically, mentally and socially active.
There is increasing research evidence to suggest that having a healthy lifestyle helps to reduce an individual’s risk.
So: look after your heart, be physically active, follow a healthy diet, challenge your brain and enjoy social activity.
I’ve just ordered and am looking forward to receiving in the post some new fitness clothing from Asquith London who specialise in yoga and Pilates activewear. They’re ethically made in the best quality, eco-friendly fabrics that are as soft as they are hardwearing.
If you’re looking for new yoga/fitness/Pilates wear, then check out
and …. if you sign up to their newsletters, you get 15% off your first order. I think that the prices are comparable to other quality fitness clothing (some makes are a lot more expensive).
The Soil Association celebrate all things organic in September. So much happening this month!
Organic September is a month-long campaign which aims to raise awareness of Organic products, and the brands, producers and farmers who bring them to us in the UK.
Foods labelled as organic must meet strict regulations on how they have been grown and produced.
All organic food companies and farms are inspected yearly to ensure that they meet the high standards required for organic food under European law.
If you’d like to find out more about the Soil Association and why they are so important to organic products in the UK, please read this article to find out more
If you’re on Twitter, use the hashtag #OrganicSeptember to find out more and join the conversation too.
That Cyrenians are an organisation that support people who’re excluded from family, home, work or community on their life journey. They’re celebrating their 50th anniversary this year with a few events happening and one of those is a Love Your Leftovers Cooking Class which is taking place on Fri 7 Sept 2-4.30pm in Flavour and Haver Cook School, 66-68 Jane Street, Edinburgh, EH6 5HG. Tickets are £15 and you can find out more about this and other events as well as more on what they’re all about on the link and their website.
When walking in town last weekend, we saw and wanted to find out more about Shrub Co-operative’s Swapshop which is at 22 Bread Street so we went in and asked and spoke to a really friendly guy. He told us that anyone can bring along/donate any pre-loved items – we saw lots of cd’s, dvd’s, clothing, guitars and other musical instruments etc. I got a leaflet which says that you can donate to the swapshop and take home something else on certain days. The shop also has a café and on Tuesdays & Thursdays 5-8pm, you can go along for a DIY drop in bike repair workshop which is a great idea.
In January, they’ll be helping out Food Sharing Edinburgh where food that would be thrown away can be donated. Did you know that 1/3 of all food produced is wasted? Food waste is not great for the environment and so many people go hungry too.
I like this quote by Abraham Lincoln: “in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years” True!
Please let me know how you’re getting on in our classes and what improvements you feel you’ve made in your fitness, diet and general lifestyle, thanks – I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you soon.
If you haven’t done so already, please sign up to our weekly Fitness Newsletters (on the top right corner of the News page of my website), add your name and email address and ‘Sign Up’.
