Complementary Fitness 21 June Newsletter

Hi and thanks for joining us today in this week’s fitness newsletter.

Today, 21 June is midsummer, solstice, the longest day of the year, enjoy every minute of it.

In one of my Insta posts last week, there was a photo of a group of people exercising outdoors doing yoga and the photo could’ve very easily been of us doing the same pose which was a warrior pose.  They had their right leg forward in a wide lunge with that leg bent and the left leg straight and with hands clasped, reaching arms up overhead to the sky.

The description that I had under the post said that:

‘We practice this yoga stretch pose in our classes because it helps us to:

  • Build focus, power and stability
  • Aim for balance and strength
  • Strengthen legs, glutes and core
  • Stretch and open up the hips
  • Stretch muscles in the groin and hip flexors
  • Stretches the front and sides of the body.

I then said ‘continue to be a warrior.  You can do this team’.

So, all true about this and other poses that we practice in our classes and I hope that you’ll continue to build strength and flexibility with us this week and moving forward.

In another post last week of a class where everyone was on their front, on their mats doing a back extension exercise (upward facing) and I said that it’s so much easier to go to a class outdoors and to exercise and work out together where we feel motivated and valued part of the class.

I said that we’d feel different about even doing 20 minutes of stretching, doing yoga or Pilates moves & poses on our mat or doing a few lunges, squats or resistance band work if we were there on our own.

It’s just not the same.  We’d feel self conscious – I know I certainly would.

So again, thanks so much for being part of our Complementary Fitness outdoor classes and keep up the great work.  It wouldn’t be the same without you.  It certainly wouldn’t be as much fun!

Today also starts World Wellbeing Week (21-30 June) which is now in it’s third year and aims to provide overall awareness of the wide-ranging aspects of wellbeing including social, physical, emotional, community and environmental wellbeing.

What does wellbeing mean to you?

It could be: happiness, health, family time, alone time, security, relaxation, friendships, exhilaration, inspiration, peace of mind, exercise, being active, eating well, getting outdoors, being in nature, a good book …

We’re just back today from a long weekend in Northumberland.  We had a cottage at Breamish Valley Cottages and have been lots of times before.

The cottages are lovely, very comfortable and there’s a gym on site as well as a pool, sauna, steam room & jacuzzi (these have to be booked in advance though coz of restrictions but easy to do).

Since we were last there, they have a restaurant on site too and Friday was pizza night which we all enjoyed (cauliflower based pizza for me, thanks very much).

We enjoyed some lovely walks including wandering around Alnwick (lovely castle & gardens to visit) and went a lovely relaxing walk along the beach from Bamburgh to Seahouses/back and is just over 3 miles one way.

It’s great to get away and enjoy somewhere different.

What did you do at the weekend?

I know some of you were away last week or are away this week and am sure you’re enjoying your holiday & having fun.

So I look forward to seeing you this week for more fitness, strength, flexibility, fun and sun in our outdoor classes at the Padel Court & Paties Rd Recreation Grounds.

As you know, when/if the weather’s not great for outdoor/outdoor Paties Rd Rec Grounds classes, then instead, I can record a Tue/Thurs class & send it to you.

Let’s keep everything crossed & put out positive vibes for more dry, sunny, warm outdoor classes this week and from now on.
