This week’s FITNESS & LIFESTYLE info, news & updates…

It’s week 2 of our Tuesday ‘Fresh-air Fitness Pilates classes’ at the new summer time of 7pm in Paties Road Recreation Grounds.

Last week’s outdoor class started off with the weather being reasonably dry (well a tiny spot of rain was in the air) and it gradually started to rain and well ….. didn’t really stop.  We did all have rainproof jackets on but our mats did get soaked.  We probably shouldn’t have attempted to use the mat – we only planked once – so no other mat/ground work was attempted last week, ha. 

Well, that was a first but I kept saying that athletes train in all weathers and if they can do it, we Complementary Fitness Athletes can do it too.  We were all aware of the forecast in advance and the weather on the night and I must say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who turned up and completed our first outdoor class.  Let’s do it again this week – I can’t wait.  Are we mad?  Nooooo, we are those athletes.  Let’s pray for better, or at least dry weather this week – dry weather is forecast, yay!!

Welcome again to all the ‘new people’ who joined our classes last week and thank you so much.  It was lovely to meet you and work out with you.  I hope that you enjoyed your class and that you’ll come back and join us again this week.

Did you know that as a nation, obesity is on the increase and a lot of people have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (probably more but undiagnosed).  Diabetes means that blood glucose (aka blood sugar) is too high.  We use glucose for energy but having too much in the blood can be harmful to the body.

Exercise can be a vital part of managing diabetes for anyone who has it.   Even for those who don’t have diabetes, being physically active can reduce the risk of getting the disease and when it comes to exercise, research has shown that in people with diabetes can:

  • Lower blood glucose and blood pressure
  • Lower bad cholesterol (also known as LDL) and raise good cholesterol (HDL)
  • Improve the body’s ability to use insulin
  • Lower the risk of heart attach/disease and stroke
  • Keep the heart and bones strong
  • Keep the joints flexible
  • Lower the risk of falling
  • Help with weight loss
  • Reduce body fat
  • Provide more energy
  • Reduce stress.

A government study showed that moderate exercise along with a healthy diet, resulted in a 5-7% weight loss which can delay and possibly prevent type 2 diabetes.

Did you know that ‘5-a-day’ is based on advice from the WHO (World Health Organisation) saying that we should consume at least 5 80g portions of various fruit and vegetables every day so that we get the right balance of nutrients for our health.  How many portions of fruit & veg do you have on a daily or weekly basis?

Oh I read this online the other day and thought I’d share it:

I feel that I’m going to sort through all my ‘stuff’ again, clear out and make some room – hopefully for better ideas.

Stretching is a key component to any fitness.  Stretching not only improves the flexibility of our muscles, but it helps increase the range of motion of our joints.  When our muscles are more flexible, the body can perform exercise and daily tasks and activities and exercise with ease and correct form which also helps to prevent injury too.

If you want to get outdoors again this weekend, Canal Festival, hosted by Re-Union Canal Boats is on Saturday 15 June from 10am-4pm at Union Canal Quay.
