On Friday, before the class started, I did another mini Complementary Fitness Yoga sequence for you to see and try out / just to let you see what we do in our classes.

Researchers at the Uni of Birmingham & King’s College, London have found that staying active keeps the body young and healthy. The researchers set out to assess the health of older adults who had exercised most of their adult lives to see if this could slow down ageing. 125 healthy amateur cyclists (+ a group of adults who did not take part in regular physical activity) were recruited for the study. The study showed that loss of muscle mass and strength didn’t occur in those who regularly exercise and didn’t increase body fat or cholesterol levels with age.
The study also revealed that the benefits of exercise extend beyond muscle as the cyclists also had an immune system that didn’t seem to have aged either. The findings showed that in the exercisers, the thymus gland continued to make immune system T cells. One professor says ‘..our findings debunk the assumption that ageing automatically makes us more frail. Our research means we now have strong evidence that encouraging people to commit to regular exercise throughout their lives is a viable solution to the problem that we are living longer but not healthier’.
So the moral of the research and story: keep exercising, keep fit and continue to keep yourself active – it has all sorts of health benefits.

The NHS website says: ‘given the overwhelming evidence, it seems obvious that we should all be physically active. It’s essential if you want to live a healthy and fulfilling life into old age.
It’s medically proven that people who do regular physical activity have:
• up to a 35% lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke
• up to a 50% lower risk of type 2 diabetes
• up to a 50% lower risk of colon cancer
• up to a 20% lower risk of breast cancer
• a 30% lower risk of early death
• up to an 83% lower risk of osteoarthritis
• up to a 68% lower risk of hip fracture
• a 30% lower risk of falls (among older adults)
• up to a 30% lower risk of depression
• up to a 30% lower risk of dementia
There are lots of facts and figures above on the benefits of exercise and why we should start and continue to be active. When you start a new class or sport though, perhaps it’s not with the intention of lowering health risks – maybe you just want to be more active, have fun in a class while working out friends. For some, it might be to lose a few pounds, tone up or improve your strength or flexibility if you work in an office/at a desk for X number of hours a day. What ever the reason, I hope that you’ll start and continue to work out with us in our Complementary Fitness classes.
